Holler- Und Wittemoor

Nature Reserve

Germany - Niedersachsen

Area: 3.92km²

The nature reserve protects what remains of a former extensive raised bog. The area, which was severely affected by drainage and peat extraction, is now on the way to regeneration following rewetting and extensification. A birch scrub forest, which is typical of drained moors, is currently developing here. The protected area is excellently developed as a recreational area. A great deal of effort has gone into creating some wide, but also very attractive hiking trails. This has been complemented by excellently designed information boards which provide information about the development of the moorland area. The observation tower is a real highlight for visitors. There is also a reconstructed boardwalk.
