Pestruper Gräberfeld Und Rosengarten

Nature Reserve

Germany - Niedersachsen

Area: 0.38km²

As the largest contiguous area of heathland in the district of Oldenburg, combined with the many burial mounds, the Pestrup burial ground exudes an extraordinary beauty and fascination. Anyone can experience nature here on short or long walks. The sites are part of the almost uniquely well-preserved burial mounds from the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age in northern Western Europe. Over 500 burial mounds characterize the 31.5 hectares of heathland and underline its cultural and historical significance. This nature reserve is also well cared for from a nature conservation point of view. For this man-made cultural landscape, the necessary grazing with Diepholz moorland sheep is carried out on behalf of the Lower Saxony State Forests, which prevents overgrowth with larger shrubs and trees and thus preserves the habitat for many endangered animal and plant species.
