Harberner Heide

Nature Reserve

Germany - Niedersachsen

Area: 0.45km²

The 46-hectare conservation area preserves a small remnant of the once huge Vehnemoor complex. Heavily affected by peat extraction, the area is gradually developing back into a habitat for the fauna and flora of the moors following abandonment and rewetting. The special feature of this small area is that in the extensively peat-covered region, peat extraction was apparently not completed here in part and there was no leveling. The thick layers of peat that still exist in places allow the site to rise slightly above the surrounding landscape. The purpose of the protection is the permanent preservation and development of the small-scale structured and partially rewetted raised bog as a habitat for bog-bound and bog-typical animal and plant species and their biocoenoses.
