The purpose of the protected area is to preserve and develop an ecologically valuable area of the Selz lowlands. This area includes a near-natural stream and ditch, woodlands and reed beds. It also includes wet grasslands, arable land and bush fruit crops, which serve as habitats for typical and rare wild plant species. The area provides habitats, resting places, wintering grounds and stepping stone biotopes for typical and rare animal species whose populations are threatened. It is part of a networked biotope system that encompasses the Selz catchment area.
