The nature reserve consists of a group of four small, distinct natural areas along the Adige River, between the municipalities of Isera, Ala, and Avio, near the border with the Veneto region. These are the last remaining semi-natural areas along the Adige River, preserving wetland habitats suitable as stopover sites for migratory birds. The Reserve is also part of the Natura 2000 network (Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area).
These remaining fragments of semi-natural riverbank along the Adige provide an indication of the river’s potential for wildlife if it had not been artificially transformed into a narrow canal-like watercourse, constrained by rigid embankments and subject to periodic removal of hygrophilous vegetation for flood-control and hydraulic safety purposes. Among the bird species found here are notable species such as the great cormorant and grey heron, as well as valuable species such as the common sandpiper and great reed warbler.
