The Ammergebirge nature reserve is home to one of the largest contiguous mixed mountain forests in Bavaria. Animal species with high demands on their habitat such as the white-backed woodpecker, black grouse and capercaillie find ideal conditions here. Another special feature of the Ammer Mountains are the wide (rubble) cirques and riverbeds with rarities of flora and fauna. On the alpine meadows above the tree line, wheatears and ptarmigan as well as the golden eagle find suitable habitats.
