The purpose of protection is the preservation and development of an ecologically significant section of the Selz floodplain, characterized by a near-natural stream course and ditches. This includes oxbow lakes of the Selz, embankments, woody plants, reed beds, fallow land, and fields influenced by groundwater and stagnant water, which serve as habitats for typical and rare wild plant species. These areas provide living and partial habitats, resting and wintering sites, as well as stepping stone biotopes for typical and rare animal species that are endangered. All of this is part of an interconnected biotope system encompassing the catchment area of the Selz.
