Conower Werder nature reserve protects ancient beech forests and wet depressions on a peninsula in Carwitzer See. It's a biodiversity hotspot for rare orchids, deadwood fungi, kingfishers, and black woodpeckers, forming a crucial old-growth forest ecosystem.
Conower Werder is a remarkable nature reserve located on a highly contoured peninsula in the southeastern part of Carwitzer See, within the Feldberger Seenlandschaft Nature Park. This area features ancient beech forests, where the terrain’s inaccessibility has preserved it from intensive use. Interspersed throughout are wet depressions teeming with sedges and alders. Recognized as an FFH and Special Protection Area, Conower Werder is a haven for diverse life. Its old-growth forest, protected since the 1980s as a scientific nature forest reserve, boasts exceptional biodiversity. This reserve provides crucial habitat for endangered orchids like White Helleborine and Common Twayblade, alongside numerous deadwood-dwelling fungi. Bird species such as kingfishers, red-breasted flycatchers, black woodpeckers, and stock doves thrive here. The significance lies in its well-preserved natural forest ecosystems and the rare flora and fauna they support.
