Nature Reserve

Nature reserves constitute one of the most important conservation categories in Germany and Austria. The exact definitions vary, but together they combine the conservation of natural landscape, the protection of endangered species and the preservation for scientific interests.

„Die Heck von Hohenroth“ ist ein reines Waldgebiet und liegt auf einer Höhe über 550 Metern im Hohen Westerwald. Das Naturschutzgebiet zeichnet sich durch seinen naturnahen Laubmischwald aus. Auf einem Mosaik aus trockenen bis nassen Standorten konnten sich viele verschieden Baumarten ansiedeln. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist der hohe Anteil von Altbäumen und Totholz, als extrem wertvoller Lebensraum für zahlreiche geschützte Tierarten, vor allem Insekten und Vögel.
