National parks have the strictest protection category among the large protected areas. Entire ecosystems and natural processes are protected here. In the Eifel National Park, extensive forests and open landscapes are on their way back to second-hand wilderness.
The Eifel National Park protects the habitats of deciduous forests, spring areas, stream valleys and open areas that characterise the natural landscape of the Eifel. True to the national park motto ‘Let nature be nature’, nature develops according to its very own laws. This creates vital refuges for thousands of endangered animal and plant species. Animal examples include the black stork, eagle owl and wildcat.
