Nature reserves constitute one of the most important conservation categories in Germany and Austria. The exact definitions vary, but together they combine the conservation of natural landscape, the protection of endangered species and the preservation for scientific interests.

In the area of the protected area, it is forbidden to swim in places other than those approved for this purpose by signs from the lower nature conservation authority.
In the area of the protected area, it is prohibited to stalk wild animals, to intentionally disturb them, to install devices suitable for catching them, to catch or kill them, or to take away or damage pupae, larvae, eggs or nests and other breeding places or habiats of such animals, without prejudice to the justified defensive measures against crop pests and other annoying or blood-sucking insects. The lawful practice of fishing remains unaffected - after approval of the lease agreement by the lower nature conservation authority - but with the condition that there are no disruptions to the breeding birds.
