The Ginsterheiden nature reserve in the Irsental valley near Daleiden in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm covers around 76 hectares and protects diverse habitats such as broom heaths, rocky, rough grassland, deciduous forest and watercourse ecosystems as well as wetland and fringe biotopes, which provide a habitat for numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species; in addition, fossil-bearing sediment layers are preserved for scientific and natural history reasons.
