Description

The Gottesheide nature reserve, encompassing Schloßsee and Lenzener See, safeguards a unique glacial moraine landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This diverse region features extensive old-growth beech and swamp forests, alternating with pine stands, shallow lakes like Schloßsee, the overgrown Lenzener See, and valuable kettle bogs. The area's protection aims to preserve and develop these special biotopes, their unique character, and diverse beauty. It provides crucial habitat for a rich array of wildlife, including rare bird species such as the white-tailed eagle, crane, and black woodpecker, as well as various cavity-nesting birds. The forests boast a high proportion of old trees, especially beech and oak. Numerous wetlands also support rare plants like royal fern, red helleborine, and round-leaved sundew. Active renaturation efforts, particularly the rewetting of the Martenschen Bruch, contribute to restoring rare forest meadow biotopes.
