Großer Wotig Nature Reserve protects its namesake island and surrounding Peenestrom areas. It safeguards intact flood grasslands, shallow waters, and valuable moor sites, offering crucial habitat for rare species.
The Großer Wotig Nature Reserve is situated east of Kröslin within the Usedom Island Nature Park, set amidst the flood landscape of the Peenestrom. It encompasses the island of Großer Wotig, along with adjacent shallow water zones and mainland sections. Protection focuses on preserving outstanding habitat types: intact flood grasslands, characterized by regular water level fluctuations, and rare flood and spring moor sites. These diverse ecosystems are vital for a rich biodiversity, particularly for specialized plants and animals adapted to damp and changing conditions. The shallow waters of the Peenestrom also provide important refuge and feeding grounds for waterfowl and specific aquatic fauna.
