The Haardtrand – Am Schlammberg nature reserve protects a historically evolved cultural landscape of special character. Its diverse mosaic, comprising vineyards of varying cultivation intensities, orchards, natural shrub and edge biotopes, forest and forest edge areas, as well as traditional dry stone walls and vineyard terraces, defines this area. This varied environment serves as a vital site for numerous rare plant species and plant communities, and as an indispensable habitat for rare and partly endangered animal species. Protection efforts aim to preserve and further develop this ecologically and regionally significant landscape.
