Hellberge nature reserve protects an 800m ridge and wetlands, preserving a rich pasture mosaic typical of East Mecklenburg's moraine landscape. It offers diverse plant life, expansive views, and significant habitats for local species.
The Hellberge nature reserve in eastern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern encompasses an 800-meter-long ridge and adjacent wetland biotopes. Its primary purpose is the preservation of a characteristic pasture landscape featuring a rich vegetation mosaic, typical for the East Mecklenburg terminal moraine landscape. These diverse habitats provide crucial protection for various species and plant communities. The name "Hell" originates from an older term meaning "sloping" or "hanging," reflecting the distinctive topography of the area. From the central ridge, near a large erratic boulder dedicated to the nature observer Walter Gotsmann, visitors can enjoy expansive views over the surrounding landscape. The protected area's good ecological condition supports its unique flora and fauna, making it a significant example of the region's natural heritage.
