Description

Majestic forests, rolling hills, fragrant juniper heaths, cool Jura streams, and steep cliffs provide habitat for numerous rare plants and animals, forming an ecologically valuable landscape in Germany. The Hirschwald Nature Park's special appeal lies in its small-scale diversity. Valleys alternate with wooded plateaus, and wide open spaces are found between rugged rocks and colorful strips of meadows, through which streams meander. This wealth of habitats is reflected in the diverse range of flora and fauna. This refuge of biodiversity has been preserved thanks to the almost mediterranean climate in the southern slopes of the valleys and the traditional grazing practices. For centuries, shepherds with their migratory flocks have shaped the landscape and preserved its unique character to this day.
