The purpose of protection is to preserve and develop an ecologically valuable area of the Selz lowlands with a near-natural stream course, reed-rich ditches, woodlands, wet meadows and fallow land, and permanently moist arable land as locations for typical and rare wild plant species, habitats and partial habitats, resting and stepping stone biotopes for typical and rare animal species threatened with extinction, as well as corresponding biotic communities in the overall context of a networked biotope system covering the Selz catchment area.
