The purpose of the protected area is to preserve and develop an ecologically valuable area of the Selz lowlands. This area includes a near-natural stream, woodlands including pollarded trees, reed beds and wet fallow land. It also includes near-natural embankments and permanently moist, temporarily flooded arable land, which serve as habitats for typical and rare wild plant species. The area provides habitats, resting places, wintering grounds and stepping stone biotopes for typical and rare animal species whose populations are threatened.
