Vilm Island, situated within the Greifswalder Bodden, is a significant nature reserve and one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's oldest protected areas, established in 1936. It safeguards the island's unique coastal ecosystems and surrounding shallow waters. This area is crucial for the undisturbed development of natural forests, serving as a dedicated natural forest reserve for scientific study. As a core zone of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve, Vilm contributes to a broader conservation effort. It is also designated as part of the Küstenlandschaft Südostrügen Habitats Directive (FFH) area and the Greifswalder Bodden and southern Strelasund Birds Directive (SPA) area. These designations highlight its importance for a diverse range of habitat types and numerous bird species, providing essential breeding, resting, and feeding grounds. The island also hosts the International Academy for Nature Conservation, underscoring its role in environmental education and research.
