Kistnerweiher Nature Reserve protects a former sand/gravel pit. It features a diverse mosaic of deep/shallow waters, sand areas, reed beds, steep banks, and grasslands. A vital habitat, connected to the Neuhofener Altrhein reserve.
The Kistnerweiher Nature Reserve, located east of Neuhofen in Rheinland-Pfalz, preserves a unique natural mosaic. Originally a sand and gravel extraction site, it has evolved into an area with remarkable biodiversity. The primary purpose of protection is the preservation of its diverse biotope types, including deep and shallow water zones, bare soil, sand, and gravel areas. These are complemented by extensive reed beds, distinctive steep banks, riparian and field groves, species-rich hedges, and extensively used grasslands, which collectively shape the landscape. This rich array of habitats serves not only as a refuge in its own right but also as an essential complement, ecological corridor, and buffer zone to the neighboring Neuhofener Altrhein Nature Reserve. It represents a valuable site for regional biodiversity.
