Klostertaler Bergwälder

Bird Sanctuary

Description & Map

Summary

Like a ribbon, the Klostertal mountain forests stretch along the sunny side of the Klostertal valley from Bludenz to Langen am Arlberg. The landscape is characterized primarily by steep forests rich in deadwood and vibrant, nutrient-poor meadows. These "untidy forests," where dead trees are still present in large numbers, provide ideal conditions for a wide range of highly specialized species. The most prominent among them are various woodpecker species. The flower-rich meadows are home to a diverse array of rare and, in some cases, protected species, such as the strikingly colorful orchids. The area is also alive with buzzing and humming, thanks to the bustling activity of insects and other small creatures.
