Lauenhagener See Nature Reserve in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a re-wetted former lake. Once a vital wetland, it's being restored to its natural state, fostering diverse wetland habitats for unique flora and fauna.
The Lauenhagener See Nature Reserve, located northwest of Strasburg (Uckermark) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is a significant landscape undergoing ecological restoration. Once a prominent lake, it was drained in the 1970s. The ongoing project aims to re-wet the area, allowing it to naturally evolve back into a vibrant wetland ecosystem. This restoration effort is crucial for re-establishing the diverse habitats that historically made this site one of the most important wetlands in the region. The primary purpose of its protection is to facilitate the natural development of this re-wetted area, supporting the return and flourishing of a wide array of specialized wetland flora and fauna. While the water levels are still stabilizing, visitors can observe the evolving landscape from a designated path in the southern part of the reserve, witnessing nature's powerful ability to reclaim and regenerate.
