Mainzer Sand is a unique nature reserve protecting a rare inland dune landscape. It's home to relict steppe flora from the Ice Age, including plants like Sand-Lotwurz found almost nowhere else in Germany, and diverse rare fauna.
The Mainzer Sand nature reserve preserves an exceptionally significant inland dune landscape. Formed after the last Ice Age around 12,000 years ago, this unique ecosystem provides a habitat for a remarkable relict steppe flora. Plants typically found in Southeast European or Central Asian steppes thrive on the warm, dry, and nutrient-poor sandy soils of the Mainz Basin. Among its botanical treasures is the Sand-Lotwurz (Onosma arenaria), a critically rare species found in Germany almost exclusively here. The reserve's protection is vital for safeguarding these rare plants and the diverse array of animals adapted to this special environment. It stands as a living testament to ancient landscapes within Central Europe.
