Mellenthiner Os is a nature reserve within the Usedom Island Nature Park, established to protect a unique geological formation – a distinctive “Os” ridge. This remarkable landform, created during the last ice age, provides a variety of habitats that support diverse flora and fauna, including species adapted to its specific conditions. The reserve also holds cultural significance, featuring the remains of the Schwedenschanze, a former Slavic hilltop castle, which adds a historical dimension to the natural landscape. The protection aims include preserving the Os as a geotope, safeguarding characteristic ecological communities, and maintaining the cultural-historical heritage. Views into the protected areas are accessible from several nearby hiking trails.
