In the north-east of Styria lies the Mürzer Oberland, surrounded by the 2,000 metre high mountain peaks of the Rax, Schneealpe and Veitsch. Extensive forests, alpine pastures, deep river valleys and the limestone mountains characterise this natural and cultural landscape along the upper Mürz valley. The Mürz rises here from two springs north of the Schneealpe and flows southeast past the summer residence and second official residence of the Federal President in Mürzsteg, past Neuberg an der Mürz Abbey and finally leaves the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park near Mürzzuschlag.
