The Murnauer Moos is one of the most ecologically valuable moor and wet meadow landscapes in Central Europe and represents one of the most important habitats for rare and threatened meadow-breeding bird species in Bavaria. Species such as the Northern Lapwing, Common Snipe, Eurasian Curlew, and Corncrake breed here—birds that have declined sharply in many regions due to habitat loss and disturbance, and that are strictly protected under national as well as European nature conservation law. The core breeding period of these ground-nesting species extends from early March to the end of June. During this sensitive time, the birds lay their eggs on the ground or in low vegetation, making them particularly vulnerable to disturbance. Even brief or repeated approaches by people, unleashed dogs, or recreational activities can cause adult birds to abandon their nests, leading to eggs cooling or chicks being inadequately cared for. In addition, there is a considerable risk that eggs or young birds may be unintentionally trampled, as they are extremely well camouflaged and difficult to see. A temporary access restriction in the designated meadow-breeder areas of the Murnauer Moos during the main breeding season is therefore necessary to ensure successful breeding and to safeguard the long-term survival of these highly endangered species. The restriction helps to minimize human disturbance, prevent direct harm to eggs and chicks, and fulfill conservation requirements under the Federal Nature Conservation Act and the EU Birds Directive.
