Nature reserves constitute one of the most important conservation categories in Germany and Austria. The exact definitions vary, but together they combine the conservation of natural landscape, the protection of endangered species and the preservation for scientific interests.
The "Karwendel Nature Reserve" is the largest protected area (543 km²) in the center of the Karwendel Nature Park. The natural area includes several well-known valleys, such as the Karwendel or Rißtal with side valleys (Vomperloch, Halltal, etc.) The area is characterized by a great abundance of forest in the valleys, on the steeper mountain flanks dominate rubble and mountain pine fields. In addition, untouched side valleys with undisturbed stream dynamics, gorges and waterfalls form narrow gorges with ravine forests in sections.
