The Moorgürtel ('peatland belt') is part of the landscape of the southern Elbe marshes and located in the south-west of Hamburg. This formerly extensive marginal bog of the Elbe glacial valley is now predominantly used as extensive grassland and represents an intact cultural landscape of particular charm, as small areas of peatland, scrub, woods, small bodies of water, reeds and sedge marshes are scattered throughout the wet meadows and pastures. This is the home of a now prominent representative of the bird world: the corncrake!
The diverse habitats in the Moorgürtel also give rise to a varied flora. Meadows and pastures make up the majority of this Nature Reserve, but rare plant species such as cabbage thistle, ragged robin, orchids and common bistort can also be found here. Specific bog species are found in the raised bogs and transition bogs of the Nincoper and Francoper peatland. In addition to peat moss species, broad-leaved cotton grass, royal fern and the nationally rare bog myrtle also grow here. In terms of wildlife, the rare corncrake, which is threatened with extinction throughout the EU, is particularly noteworthy. The species has very high demands on the habitat conditions of its breeding area, which are met in the peatland belt by closely interlinked mosaic-like habitats within large areas.
