The Ammeloer Venn nature reserve preserves a diverse landscape of high natural value. Protected habitats include rare bog woodlands, dystrophic lakes, oligo- to mesotrophic waters with specific vegetation, wet and dry heaths, and transition mires and quaking bogs. Ammeloer Venn is an important refuge for endangered animal species. It is home to the Great Crested Newt and the Large White-faced Darter. Birdwatchers may observe species such as the Black Woodpecker, European Nightjar, and Bluethroat. Migratory birds like the Shoveler, Common Teal, Eurasian Hobby, and Northern Lapwing also find resting and breeding grounds here.
