Die Schutzausweisung erfolgt zur Erhaltung eines Stillgewässers mit gut ausgebildeten Unterwasser-Schwimmpflanzen- und Röhrichtzonen sowie zur Erhaltung und Wiederherstellung angrenzender Verlandungszonen mit Auenwaldkomplex. Das Gebiet ist als Rast- und Brutplatz für seltene und gefährdete Wasservogelarten und als Lebensraum für Amphibien zu sichern.
