One of the most beautiful nature reserves, rich in flora and fauna, is located in the south-east of the Hanseatic city and embodies all of Hamburg's essential landscapes in one place: the geest, which is up to 30 metres high (in the north and northeast), the inland dunes (in the centre of the nature reserve), the Achtermoor as a relic of the marginal bog zone (in the west) and, further south, the marshlands (Billwerder).
The Boberger Niederung is unique in the Hamburg metropolitan area in terms of their diversity and variety of biotope types, and as a relatively small nature reserve covering 350 hectares, they are probably unique in Germany as well. In a very small area, inland dunes and heaths, swamp and deciduous forests, bog and water areas, reeds, pastures and fallow land, and the orchid terraces of the geest slope all harmonise with each other. Essentially, there are five characteristic natural areas, each of which is home to its own flora specialised to the corresponding soil type. The vegetation zones are as diverse as the fauna, whose species are specialised to the individual habitats. Here you can find grasshoppers, bees and wasps, but also butterflies such as the endangered six-spot burnet.
