The Eppendorfer Moor nature reserve, which is located directly on the Alsterkrugchaussee, was expanded from 15.3 to 26 hectares in 2014. The aim was to incorporate valuable existing biotopes and restored areas in the immediate vicinity into the reserve. This decision by the Senate follows a resolution passed by the Hamburg-Nord District Assembly in November 2012.
The Eppendorf peatland is characterised by a particularly diverse and richly structured complex of peatlands. Within a confined space, common reed, slender tufted sedge, reedbeds, cross-leaved heather communities with moor grass, and thickets of willow and alder-buckthorn alternate. Marsh and royal ferns, water violets, marsh cinquefoil, cross-leaved heather, marsh gentian and bog-myrtle all grow here. This peatland is home to many species of breeding bird. Over the past ten years, the following species have been recorded as breeding birds: little grebes, kingfishers, spotted flycatchers, European green woodpeckers, nuthatches and marsh tits. Common buzzards and Eurasian goshawks have also been spotted. Various species of bat have been recorded around the central pond. However, Eppendorfer Moor is a particularly rich habitat for butterflies. In 1989, 641 species were recorded here, 78 of which are on the Red List. The central fen area is home to 25 species of dragonfly. Small but stable populations of the rare moor frog, grass and water frog can also be found here, as well as the common toad. The smooth newt has also been observed here.
