The Genfbachtal southeast of Nettersheim protects valuable mountain hay meadows, calcareous springs, and rare dry grasslands. It's a vital habitat for wildcats and many endangered species in natural forests and wetlands.
The Genfbachtal southeast of Nettersheim nature reserve is a crucial component of the European Natura 2000 network, safeguarding a rich natural heritage. It preserves diverse habitats including species-rich mesophilic mountain hay meadows, rare calcareous tufa springs with their unique sinter structures, and calcareous fens. Distinctive brome-fescue calcareous dry grasslands, known for their characteristic flora, also thrive here. The area features near-natural alder-ash and softwood alluvial forests in various stages of development. The stream itself, with its steep banks, is a central ecological element, serving as an important habitat and migration corridor for the wildcat. This reserve is home to numerous animal and plant species listed as endangered or rare in North Rhine-Westphalia. Wet and moist grasslands, reed beds, and swamps further enrich the protected biotopes, contributing to the preservation of groundwater conditions.
