Description

The Gunnewiesen nature reserve is a significant area within the Ostmünsterländer Sandebene and the floodplain of the Upper Lippe Valley, renowned for its diverse moist and lean grasslands. It features extensive tall herb communities, near-natural sections of the Gunne river, and temporary shallow waters with sedge and dwarf rush communities. This dynamic landscape provides essential habitat for rare and endangered animal and plant species. Specifically protected and promoted are flood meadows, swamps, reed beds, and moist fallow lands, which serve as crucial breeding grounds for waders and meadow birds. Furthermore, the area is home to valuable alder-ash and soft-wood riparian forests, bog and swamp forests, as well as distinctive riparian trees and pollard trees. The Gunnewiesen represent an outstanding example of the region's natural biodiversity and are of great importance for scientific research and nature conservation.
