Description
The Hagen - Koenigsseite Nature Reserve safeguards the distinctive mountain cone of Obermarsberg, rising from the Diemeltal. This area is vital for its natural beauty and diverse ecosystems, forming part of the European Natura 2000 network. It features rich deciduous forests, including alder-ash, woodruff-beech, and ravine-slope mixed forests, some with ancient trees providing crucial deadwood habitats. Special protection is given to unique habitats like silicate rock formations, scree slopes, and wet tall herb communities, alongside diverse grasslands and dry heathlands. The reserve's flowing waters support species like the groppe and kingfisher. Underground, the historic 'Drakenhöhlen' and other caves are protected as significant geological sites and crucial wintering quarters for various bats, including the pond bat and greater mouse-eared bat, as well as amphibians and insects. The area also provides sanctuary for birds like the red kite, black woodpecker, and eagle owl, nesting in natural rock systems.
