Haubachtal protects valuable molinia meadows, calcareous fens with orchids, and near-natural beech forests. Home to bullheads, brook lampreys, great grey shrikes, bats, and diverse butterflies. A landscape of unique natural beauty.
The Haubachtal, Dietrichseiffen with Urftaue nature reserve is a significant protected area and part of the European Natura 2000 network. It preserves a diversity of rare and valuable habitats. Here, one finds characteristic molinia meadows, species-rich lowland and montane hay meadows, and calcareous fens often distinguished by orchid-rich sedge vegetation. Extensive, near-natural woodruff-beech forests on base-rich sites are also characteristic, alongside undisturbed flowing waters and species-rich nardo-grasslands, which harbor Arnica. These diverse biotopes provide a home for a rich array of wildlife. Particularly protected species include the European bullhead and brook lamprey in the waters, and the great grey shrike among the birds. The area is also an important refuge for endangered species listed on the Red List in North Rhine-Westphalia, including numerous bat and bird species such as the stonechat and red-backed shrike, diverse insect species like butterflies, as well as amphibians and reptiles. Geoscientifically valuable objects are also present. The landscape of the Urft and Haubachtal, with its meadows and woody structures, is notable for its unique character and special beauty.
