Description
This nature reserve encompasses the Holderbachtal and Dürholderbachtal, a diverse landscape vital for numerous species and habitats in the Städteregion Aachen. The area protects flowing waters with rich underwater vegetation, dry heaths, and wet tall herb communities. Significant forest types include Luzulo-Fagetum beech forests and unique bog woodlands. It serves as a crucial habitat for endangered plants and animals, including the Kingfisher, Nutcracker, Black Woodpecker, and Grey-headed Woodpecker. The Bullhead fish thrives in its waters, and the rare Bog Asphodel dots its landscape. This area safeguards extensive lean and wet grasslands, near-natural stream sections, and alder swamp forests in the spring areas, creating an important biotope network to the Rur-Talsystem. Various protected biotope types are present, such as riparian forests, swamps, reed beds, natural rock formations, bogs, fen and swamp forests, and Nardus grasslands, reflecting a well-developed and varied ecosystem.
