The Holzhafen Nature Reserve, covering an area of approx. 80 hectares, is a harbour basin located in the south of Billwerder Bay. Alongside the Mühlenberger Loch, it is the most important resting place in Hamburg for migratory bird species such as the northern shoveler, the common teal and the common shelduck, thanks to its extensive tidal waters and mudflats.
The protected area also includes a tidal foreshore, created in 2008 by removing a dyke as a nature conservation measure. This extension to the Holzhafen covers approximately 20 hectares. This area is home to a species community that has adapted to the tidal cycle. Plant species found here include the narrow-leaved water plantain, the eastern marsh ragwort and Oenanthe conioides, all of which are threatened with extinction in Hamburg. The Holzhafen also plays an important role as a feeding, spawning and nursery ground for fish.
