The Irrgeister Nature Reserve in Winterberg safeguards a valuable grassland valley system, taking its name from the frequent mists that rise from its wet meadows. It preserves extensive, species-rich habitats including damp and wet grasslands, spring fens, lean pastures, and mown meadows. Specific biotope types such as oat-grass and great burnet-sedge meadows, moist tall herb communities, and natural flowing waters with submerged vegetation define this landscape. These diverse environments offer crucial protection for numerous bird, insect, and plant species, many of which are endangered regionally. Among the protected birds are the Meadow Pipit, Stonechat, Corncrake, Red-backed Shrike, and Common Snipe. Preserving this unique natural landscape and its rich biodiversity is a central aim of the area, which is also part of the European Natura 2000 network.
