Description

The Michelsbach, Ahbach, and Aulbach nature reserve safeguards a rich array of natural features. It preserves near-natural, meandering stream systems, crucial for species like the Brook Lamprey and European Bullhead. The area boasts diverse forests, including extensive beech, riparian, and ravine forests. Significant open habitats range from species-rich calcareous dry grasslands with orchids and Nardus grasslands on silicate rock to lean hay meadows, dry European heaths, and various wetlands like calcareous fens and quaking bogs. This reserve is a vital part of the European Natura 2000 network, providing essential habitat for endangered bats such as the Pond, Bechstein's, and Greater Mouse-eared bats. It also supports numerous bird species like the Red Kite, Kingfisher, Black Woodpecker, and Whinchat, as well as providing a crucial corridor for the Wildcat. Its geological formations, including unique sinter terraces and diverse rock types, along with historically shaped cultural landscapes, add to its exceptional beauty and ecological significance.
