The Upper Ruhr Valley Nature Reserve near Winterberg is a valuable grassland valley system safeguarding a rich diversity of habitats and species. It includes species-rich mountain and lowland hay meadows, maintained through traditional mowing practices, alongside rare Nardus grasslands and dry heathlands. Near-natural Luzulo-Fagetum beech forests and flowing waters with their characteristic submerged vegetation complete this ecological mosaic. This area provides a home for numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species, such as the Meadow Pipit and the Snipe, which find suitable living conditions here. The conservation of these habitats contributes to the preservation of biodiversity and ensures the coherence of the European Natura 2000 protected area system. Traditional grassland management plays a crucial role in maintaining this diverse landscape.
