Rothsteinsmoor

Nature Reserve

Description & Map

Summary

The Rothsteinsmoor nature reserve is located in Langenhorn, not far from the airport. It is an approximately nine-hectare remnant moor and a valuable refuge for rare and endangered plant and animal species.

Description

Conserving peatlands reduces the production and release of climate-damaging greenhouse gases, such as CO₂ and nitrous oxide, by binding these substances in organic matter. Rewetting drained peatlands can significantly reduce negative climate impacts. As well as reducing CO₂ emissions, peatlands play a key role in balancing the water cycle and providing evaporative cooling. Rothsteinsmoor is all that remains of an extensive, contiguous raised bog landscape that once covered the area. It is located northeast of the airport. Much of the area is covered by deciduous forest and small areas of heathland, as well as a sand dune. This small-scale diversity of protected biotopes provides suitable habitats for a large number of plant and animal species. The preservation and development of the Rothsteinsmoor aims to create a 'stepping stone biotope' to connect the moor's plant and animal species with those of the surrounding moors, namely the Raakmoor and the Hummelsbütteler Moors.
