Ruhraue Syburg protects the unique Ruhr floodplain with its diverse meadows, reed beds, and riverbanks. It's vital for rare plants like Marsh Ragwort and animals such as Kingfishers, Whinchats, and various newts, preserving the landscape's natural beauty.
The Ruhraue Syburg Nature Reserve safeguards a valuable segment of the Ruhr floodplain, dedicated to preserving and restoring its rich biodiversity. This area is crucial for maintaining diverse plant and animal communities, including extensively managed lean and wet meadows vital for species like Great Burnet, Marsh Ragwort, Whinchat, and Lapwing. Still waters with their well-structured banks offer refuge for rare aquatic plants such as Spiked Water-milfoil and animals like water frogs and various newts. Expansive reed beds provide a specialized habitat for Flowering Rush, Tubular Water-dropwort, Water Rail, and Marsh Harrier. Near-natural riverbanks, featuring steep sections, gravel, and sandbanks, are home to Kingfishers, Sand Martins, and Little Ringed Plovers. Additionally, river-adjacent tall herb, fringe, and old-grass communities support species like Meadowsweet, Water Dock, Harvest Mice, and various invertebrates. The reserve also secures essential breeding, resting, wintering, and foraging grounds for numerous wading birds and waterfowl, contributing significantly to the ecological health and outstanding natural beauty of the Ruhr landscape.
