Description
The Schaaken Nature Reserve preserves a valuable, species-rich mosaic of biotopes northeast of Brilon. It includes extensively used calcareous grasslands, natural and secondary rock biotopes, and a limestone beech forest. These diverse habitats are crucial for rare and endangered animal and plant species. The area plays an important role in the regional network of similar biotope structures and contributes to the coherence of the European Natura 2000 protected area system. Furthermore, it contains culturally significant relics of calamine mining and a geoscientifically important rock face, which are of local historical interest. Maintaining this traditional grassland use is essential for preserving the unique biotope mosaic.
