Sticklenberg - Schwarze Haupt nature reserve protects diverse coppice and deciduous forests on limestone, unique hilly landscapes, and rare species. It preserves historically managed areas and is part of Natura 2000 and a bird sanctuary.
The Sticklenberg - Schwarze Haupt nature reserve safeguards unique natural landscapes north and west of Messinghausen. It protects species-rich communities of coppice and other deciduous forests thriving on limestone soils. Also preserved are the diverse substitute communities that developed from historical, extensive agricultural practices, with efforts including restoring areas by removing inappropriate tree species. The area is notable for its distinct character and beauty as a hilly region on the edge of the 'Padberger Schweiz'. A core purpose of its protection is to secure habitats for rare animal and plant species, facilitated by its connection to adjacent protected areas. The remaining coppice forests hold historical and cultural significance, as this traditional form of forest management is now rare. A small section is especially valuable for its geological and scientific importance. The reserve plays a crucial role within the European Natura 2000 network, specifically as part of the 'Kalkkuppen bei Brilon' FFH area and, since 2023, the Diemel- and Hoppecketal bird sanctuary.
