The Westerweiden and Finkenwerder Süderelbe nature reserves are directly adjacent to each other and protect the most beautiful, near-natural area of the Alte Süderelbe, a former tributary of the Stromelbe.
The Westerweiden nature reserve features lush meadows and pastures which have been used for horse and cattle farming for over 800 years. The largest area is made up of extensively farmed grassland criss-crossed by ditches. Grazing by young bulls and horses in these wide open spaces ensures that endangered plant species, such as crested dog's tail, knotweed and speedwell, can survive in Hamburg. The grasslands of the Westerweiden are home to a diverse flora, with rare species such as flowering rush, buttercup and valerian (Valeriana sambucifolia) adding colourful accents to the landscape.
