The Upper Wiedtal nature reserve protects the near-natural upper course of the Wied river. It safeguards diverse habitats like springs, streams, wet meadows, and riparian forests, providing a haven for rare species.

The Upper Wiedtal is the largest nature reserve in the Westerwaldkreis, dedicated to preserving and developing the near-natural upper course of the Wied river. As a characteristic low mountain range stream, the Wied here forms a unique mosaic of valuable biotopes. The area encompasses an impressive variety of habitats, including numerous springs and small streams that define the landscape. Wet meadows and various forest types, such as fens, spring forests, and riparian forests, complement this ecologically precious structure. These diverse habitats provide a crucial refuge for specialized plant and animal species and significantly contribute to the region's biodiversity. The protection aims to maintain this sensitive ecosystem and its natural dynamics for future generations.
