Paschensee nature reserve protects an endorheic, mesotrophic, low-calcium lake, surrounded by forests and fens. A vital Natura 2000 site in Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide for rare habitats and diverse bird species.
The Paschensee nature reserve, nestled within the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park, safeguards a distinctive lake and forest landscape. At its heart lies Paschensee, an endorheic, mesotrophic, low-calcium lake, enveloped by vast forest expanses. Adjacent fens along its shores provide critical habitats for rare species. This unique interplay of lake, forest, and wetlands forms a vital component of the European Natura 2000 network. The area holds significant value as both a Habitats Directive (FFH) site, recognized for its specific habitat types, and a European Bird Protection Area, offering essential breeding, resting, and feeding grounds for numerous bird species. Ongoing landscape management, including the grazing that keeps former forest pasture areas open, helps maintain the rich biodiversity. Visitors are welcome to appreciate the natural beauty and observe the protected ecosystems along designated paths.
