Rosenheimer Lay

Nature Reserve

Description & Map

The former quarry is now a wetland biotope and, with its shallow water zone, forms a unique habitat, especially for amphibians, reptiles and birds.

The Rosenheimer Lay is an idyllic nature reserve in the district of Altenkirchen, nestled in the picturesque Westerwald. Originally an active quarry that was used for basalt mining until 1976, the site has now developed into a valuable wetland biotope. The former quarry, also known as Kotzenrother Lay, now forms a unique habitat for numerous endangered animal species, especially amphibians, reptiles and birds. To the north of the Rosenheimer Lay is the Lindians Seifen nature reserve, which further enriches the region. The aim of nature conservation here is clear: to preserve this historic quarry with its valuable water and shallow water zones and steep slopes overgrown with trees and shrubs. This varied landscape plays a crucial role in the protection and conservation of rare animals and plants. Particularly fascinating is the quarry bottom, which is now covered with water and forms shallow water areas that are essential for the local flora and fauna. A true paradise for nature lovers and botanists who want to experience the unique beauty of this protected natural area.
